Welcome to Kids in the Kitchen. This is my 2nd KITK post, which will be a regularly occurring feature the first Friday of every month (check out the first one for St Patrick’s Day).
I am always surprised to hear that people aren’t teaching their children how to cook…or even basic kitchen rules and safety. It’s just something that I do naturally, so I thought I would share with y’all.
I am looking for pictures of you in the kitchen teaching your kids and of course, your kid friendly recipes. If you have anything you’d like to share or would like to be considered as a guest poster please email me at aroundmyfamilytable (at) gmail.com with the subject Kids In The Kitchen.
My 8 year old nephew, Robert, just loves to help out in the kitchen. He has been cooking with his mom….my sister…for many years now. In fact, Robert came up with this recipe and makes the whole meal for his family of 6 all on his own. My 6 year old daughter also makes this meal, but I thought I would let him share it with you today.
BBQ Chicken Bites
1/2 – 1 chicken breast per person
bottle of favorite BBQ sauce
Cut the chicken breasts into roughly 1 x 2 inch cubes. In a large skillet, over medium high heat, cook the chicken (stirring often) until it is no longer pink in the center and a light golden brown on the outside. Add about 1/2 a bottle of BBQ sauce to the chicken, stirring to coat. Add more sauce to your family’s preferences. Cook until the sauce is warm; it only takes a minute or two.
Serve with brown rice and a green salad.
I promise your kids will not only love to eat this meal, but they can easily prepare it too.
Teachable Moments: cleanliness, knife safety, skillet/stovetop safety, salmonella poisoning
Finally, I want to thank my friend, Lucretia, over at Paisley Moon Whimsical Art Studios for putting my scattered ideas into graphic form for this project (and all of my other buttons and graphics). She is super quick and such a pleasure to work with. Please stop by her sight if you have a chance and say hi.

It’s wonderful to get kids in the kitchen when they are young! I did that with my son and now he is 18 he loves to cook and is always inventing new dishes. Your photographs are so cute, and that is a great recipe for kids to make.
I wonder if you might like to come along and link up to Feed Me Tweet Me Follow Me Home, a foodie blog hop that I co-host on a Friday. The linky is up now. Hope to see you there! Have a great weekend!

Children love cooking. It is a necessary skill, and will be useful all of their lives. Plus, teaching children to cook is fun and is instantly rewarding. I am very proud of Robert’s culinary skills. Solar cooking is an easy and fun way to cook. Look at the delicious brownies my granddaughter baked in the solar oven last year.

That’s great beginning recipe. Easy to make, and it tastes good too.
Oh my goodness, it looks so cute Wendy! I am excited about this feature and can’t wait to share with my daughter. She is the chef of the family and everyday after school she pulls out my cookbooks and reads through them while she has a snack. She’s always the first to help cook. So I am excited to read a long and see what fun recipes I can share with her

I love it! My kidlets love to cook and help me with just about every meal. We will definitely be following this.
My kids love to help in the kitchen. My oldest son is always coming up with ideas. I have a 2 year old daycare child who I call my little chef. Whenever I am cooking or cutting veggies he’s RIGHT there asking to taste and telling me how much he loves to cook!

I have a kid in the kitchen right this moment. It’s actually my husband trying out his new jalapeno core tool he got from Cabela’s. He’s as happy as a kid. LOL
